Bird Watching in North Wales

Looking for places to go bird watching in North Wales?

Coastal North Wales is the worst kept secret in bird watching.

Many people are attracted to the coastal area between Llandudno and Prestatyn at various times of the year to enjoy a wide range of migrating and resident birds.

The area is host to the iconic Great Orme with resident coastal birds such as kittiwakes as well as the elusive chough.

Gronant Dunes Local Nature Reserve near Prestatyn is home to the only colony of little terns in Wales.

The little terns migrate back from Africa in April through to September to breed at the same point every year.

There are a number of other local nature reserves which are managed specifically to conserve the bird habitats and population numbers.

These reserves are all well furnished with information boards and easy access walkways with the best vantage points clearly signposted.

Want to know what birds you will find whilst bird watching in North Wales?

Coastal birds are here in abundance including razorbills, cormorants and kittiwakes that line the limestone cliffs rising out of the sea.

The coastal beaches are also home to noisy oystercatchers, ringed plovers and Little Egrets searching for food in the rocky shallows.

There are a number of grassland habitats within the area which are home to skylarks, peregrine falcons and the rare chough.

Conwy County Borough Council and Denbighshire County Council run regular events to introduce people to bird watching in North Wales and help with indentifying the various birds in the area.
